Can FreeNas serve files securely over the internet?

Does FreeNas have the capability of serving files securely over the internet? I currently have a LAN which includes a server running Windows 8, a laptop and a desktop. The laptop and desktop each run the same software locally

but all storage is on the server. I would like to be able to use the laptop remotely and still access the server as if
