Why don’t I get surround sound when I play movies on my TV through the USB port?

I have a 1 GB external hard drive which I attach to my TV for movies through the USB port. My question is why it is I can only get sound through the TV speakers and not my surround sound system. I have tried everything that I know of and no surround sound with the USB port…
