Rich people apparently just gave Trump’s nonexistent social network $1B

All of us have dumb ideas, and our friends might indulge us by giving us a few bucks to fulfill them. But a billion dollars? Well, perhaps —if you’re Donald Trump. US President’s social network said in a press release that it just received $1 billion in funding from a “diverse group of institutional investors,” without disclosing any names. After this deal, the Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), is reportedly valued at $4 billion. Investors are putting their money into a merged venture consisting of  TMTG and the Digital World Acquisition Corp, a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC).  $1… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/3lFUQKl Read full article: The Next Web

Qualcomm’s betting on AI to take on Apple and Google’s chips

Apple has been in a league of its own when it comes to developing processors for phones and embedding its own AI-powered experience. But this year, Google has thrown its hat in the ring by debuting its indigenous Tensor Chip to give the Pixel 6 a platform to showcase the company’s vision for smartphones. This massive push by tech giants into the chip game means that Qualcomm, once a leading player in the smartphone industry, will face more competition than ever. So, this year, the chipmaker is relying heavily on AI to give its new processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/3Ea9n8l Read full article: The Next Web

Facebook wants you to believe its AI is working against hate speech

In the middle of the last decade, Facebook decided it needed to build AI to fight hate speech. While the technology did work in some cases, we’ve also seen glaring failures. After the Christchurch shooting, for example, Facebook wasn’t able to quickly remove the video. Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal published a new report indicating Facebook’s AI can’t identify first-person shooting videos and racist rants consistently. Plus, there was a bizarre incident where the algorithm wasn’t able to separate cockfighting and car crashes.  The report noted that the firm’s AI only detects a small part of hate speech posts on… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Facebook https://ift.tt/3mj5acd Read full article: The Next Web

How Google wants to be your primary choice to track breaking news

When I think of breaking news, I think about scrolling my timeline on Twitter to catch up on the latest developments in the story. Google wants to change that with a feature called Big Moments. Google News is a good platform to catch up on some news that you might have missed or read articles on different topics. However, it’s not the best place to track breaking news. According to a report by The Information, a team within the company has been trying to develop features to draw you towards Google during critical events. It noted that the Big Moments… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Google https://ift.tt/3FCS1So Read full article: The Next Web

Who is Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen?

Over the last few weeks, the Wall Street Journal published a series of reports against Facebook, alleging the company allowed the proliferation of hate speech on its platform, and ignored the safety of teens on Instagram. These reports were based on internal documents WSJ reviewed. Today, the whistleblower behind uncovering documents, Frances Haugen, appeared on the TV show 60 minutes to talk about why she decided to reveal some of Facebook’s secrets. Haugen, 37, is a data scientist from Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s degree in business. WhatsApp payments might soon earn you cash back

WhatsApp Pay is one of the few money-making options for the popular chat app, which doesn’t have any ads. And to make more people use its services, the company might be planning to offer cashback rewards. According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a cashback feature in a beta version of its Android app. The last November, the company launched WhatsApp Pay in India, after running it in the test mode for two years, due to regulatory hurdles. The kids aren’t alright: China limits TikTok use for children to 40 minutes a day

Kids in China have it tough. Weeks after the country limited their online multiplayer gaming time to just three hours a week, it’s putting a cap on TikTok usage with a mere 40 minutes a day allowed. That’s harsh. Over the weekend, ByteDance, the owner of China’s Tiktok version called Douyin, said that it’s introducing a new ‘Youth Mode’ for kids under 14. This new mode will let them use the app for just 40 minutes a day. Plus, they’re not allowed to use it between 10PM and 6AM. This Youth Mode is applicable to users who are registered with their… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/3tSKXf0 Read full article: The Next Web

Xiaomi’s upcoming smart glasses are all about “an engineering mindset”

Xiaomi today announced its entry into the smart glasses (not AR glasses) world with the most marketing post ever. Before we dive into the technical detail of the wearable, I want everyone to know the company describes this as an “engineering mindset to create a future viewpoint.” Yep. The Xiaomi Smart Glasses have a 0.13-inch MircoLED display on one of the lenses. The company says it uses “optical waveguide technology” — which refracts light at 180 degrees — to display content, such as notifications and navigation assistance, on the screen. The glasses have an in-built  2.4mm x 2.02mm display chip… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Xiaomi https://ift.tt/3AbPyez Read full article: The Next Web

How the H.266 video standard will help stream content way faster

We watch a ton of videos every day, but we might not get a smooth experience and the best experience in all conditions. This is because of bandwidth restrictions or the file size of the videos being streamed. This may lead to a delay in buffering or a pixelated stream. That’s why we need video compression algorithms and standards, which help reduce the size of the files beamed to your device. We have a ton of them already. Video compression makes it easier to transfer these files over the internet without burning through your data limits in a few minutes,… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/3zM7n3M Read full article: The Next Web

Germany wants to ensure your phone last up to 7 years — that’s not a typo

Phone makers usually offer two or three years of software updates, and a couple of years of security patches after that for their flagship devices. Remember the time when Facebook forced us to download Messenger to chat with friends make calls? Now, the company wants to bring video and voice calling back to the main app. According to a report from Bloomberg, starting this week, some users will be able to make voice and video calls directly from the app. While currently, this is just a test, the company said this feature will “reduce the need to jump back and forth between Facebook’s main app and its Messenger service.” Tables have turned. In 2014, Facebook first started the push towards Messenger by discontinuing the chat feature in… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Facebook https://ift.tt/3gsOcV8 Read full article: The Next Web

OnlyFans wants to find ‘solutions’ for sex workers after its stupid porn ban

One of the biggest tech news of last week was OnlyFans banning porn content. The video streaming platform said at that time it has taken this decision to “ensure the long-term sustainability.” As my colleague, Napier pointed out, this move is dumb. It comes in the wake of payment processors bullying the platform into banning sexually explicit content for a ‘clean’ image. However, porn is one of the most popular content categories on OnlyFans, and the ban deprives a lot of sex workers of a chance to earn more money. After facing a lot of backlash over this decision, the… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/3z4mG7J Read full article: The Next Web
