Watching this AI-assisted art video is like tripping on acid in the Matrix

Jason Silva, futurist and host of National Geographic’s “Brain Games,” recently published a mind-bending YouTube video combining the technological prowess of AI with the artistic creativity of someone who believes in the power of psychoactive experiences. It’s called “Dreaming while awake: a journey into ourselves.” The description on Silva’s YouTube channel describes the video as: The first art piece of the singularity: born from a human-AI collaboration by Jason Silva, Hueman Instrument and digital intelligence. Personally, I’d describe it as a surrealistic experience that seems equal parts Ted Talk and Burning Man. And, I’d add, it makes me want to eat… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/zcCUnSL Read full article: The Next Web

The UAE’s AI minister wants ‘murder’ in the metaverse to be a real crime

Omar Sultan Al Olama, the United Arab Emirates minister of artificial intelligence, yesterday told an audience at the World Economic forum in Davos that it’s his belief that people who commit “serious crimes” in the metaverse should be punished with real-world criminal consequences. Per an article by CNBC’s Sam Shead, the minister views this as a necessary measure to protect people’s mental health: If I send you a text on WhatsApp, it’s text right? It might terrorize you but to a certain degree it will not create the memories that you will have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) from it. But… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/oUEBFvJ Read full article: The Next Web

DuckDuckGo faces widespread backlash over tracking deal with Microsoft

DuckDuckGo’s reputation for protecting privacy has taken a hit after revelations emerged of a tracking deal with Microsoft. Security researcher Zack Edwards this week revealed that DuckDuckGo’s mobile browsers allow some Microsoft sites to bypass its block on trackers. While the browser blocks Facebook and Google trackers, DuckDuckGo makes an exception for Microsoft. Edwards found that the browsers allow allows data to be sent to Microsoft’s LinkedIn and Bing domains “You can capture data within the DuckDuckGo so-called private browser on a website like Facebook’s workplace.com and you’ll see that DDG does NOT stop data flows to Microsoft’s Linkedin domains… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Microsoft https://ift.tt/X7xo3BQ Read full article: The Next Web

NASA taps into the magic of diffraction to build solar sailing spacecraft

Sails have propelled earthlings across the seas for millennia, but NASA believes their future is off-world. The space agency has unveiled plans to develop a new solar sail system for a demonstration mission. Dubbed Diffractive Solar Sailing, the project won Phase III of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program, which supports visionary space technologies. Those picked for Phase III are the closest to becoming real — so a spacecraft powered by solar sails isn’t a quixotic prospect. Indeed, variations of the technique have already reaped results. In 2010, a Japanese probe called Ikaros became the first craft to successfully use the tech… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: NASA https://ift.tt/jVkZrzu Read full article: The Next Web

There’s nowhere to hide: This drone can track targets through forests

A team of researchers from Austria recently developed an AI-powered drone capable of tracking moving objects through dense foliage. So much for escaping to the woods and living off the land if the machines ever rise up against us. Per the team’s research paper: While detecting and tracking moving targets through foliage is difficult (and often even impossible) in regular aerial images or videos, it becomes practically feasible with image integration … This finding together with the implementation of an initial drone-operated camera array for parallel synthetic aperture aerial imaging allows presenting first results on tracking moving people through dense… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/OxIUr4X Read full article: The Next Web

Google Street View now lets you ‘time travel’ on your phone. Here’s how

While the real-life Delorean still can’t go back to the future, Google’s Street View vehicles can now transport us to the past. Historial images captured by the cars have been assembled in a tool that shows how places have changed over time. The feature was previously only available on the desktop version of Google Maps, but is now available on smartphones. “Street View is all about capturing the world as it changes, and it’s also a powerful way to reminisce about the past,” said Ethan Russell, senior director of product management for Google Maps, in a blogpost. “Starting today on… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Google https://ift.tt/tJHInR2 Read full article: The Next Web

No, MIT’s new AI can’t determine a person’s race from medical images

MIT researchers recently made one of the boldest claims related to artificial intelligence we’ve seen yet: they believe they’ve built an AI that can identify a person’s race using only medical images. And, according to the popular media, they have no idea how it works! Sure. And I’d like to sell you an NFT of the Brooklyn Bridge. Let’s be clear up front, per the team’s paper, the model can predict a person’s self-reported race: In our study, we show that standard AI deep learning models can be trained to predict race from medical images with high performance across multiple… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/yNo8lpT Read full article: The Next Web

I was trapped in a Croatian crypto festival while the market crashed

The pilot must have seen a crash coming. The BlockDown Web3 conference was kicking off the next day. TNW was flying in to attend — but the fates had other plans. After descending towards the landing strip in Split, Croatia, the plane suddenly reversed course and climbed back into the skies. A shroud of Saharan sand had made it too dangerous to land — and the real drama had only just begun. When we finally arrived in Croatia the next day, the crypto market had entered its biggest downturn in years. Falling skies The seeds of the crash were sown… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/zAu51qa Read full article: The Next Web

A beginner’s guide to AI: Machine superiority

There currently exists no machine capable of superhuman feats of intelligence. I’m sorry to be the one who bursts your bubble but, at least for the time being, that’s the way the universe works. It might seem like AI is smarter than humans in some ways. For example, the powerful neural networks used by big tech can sort through millions of files in a matter of seconds, a feat that would take humans more than a single lifetime. But that’s not a superhuman feat of intellect. It’s trading human attention for machine speed. On a file per file basis, there… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/j3AJ62q Read full article: The Next Web

Losing Ian Goodfellow to DeepMind is the dumbest thing Apple’s ever done

There are a lot of machine learning developers in the world. But only one has been mentored by both Andrew Ng and Yoshua Bengio, invented a new kind of artificial neural network, contributed to or led research at Google Brain, OpenAI and Apple, and still has fewer than 40 candles to blow out on their birthday cake. And Apple just let him walk out the door and right into Google’s offices where he’ll soon be working for the DeepMind research team. His name is Ian Goodfellow. And letting him walk away from your California-based, Silicon Valley elite, ultra-progressive technology company… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Apple https://ift.tt/MsmvKpx Read full article: The Next Web

Play-to-earn sells the dream of gaming for cash — so why isn’t everyone playing?

The crypto crash has spooked many investors, but blockchain bros have high hopes for one nascent application: GameFi. A portmanteau of “game” and “decentralized finance,” the model offers a chance at earning cash by gaming. Players who complete in-game tasks are rewarded with crypto and NFTs, which can then be traded for real money. It’s a tempting pitch on paper. But play-to-earn shows signs of plateauing before it enters the mainstream. In April, active users shrunk by 24.9% to 9.22 million, while transaction volumes fell by 73.4%, according to Footprint Analytics, After consistent growth last year, the number of new… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/KrabW6I Read full article: The Next Web

Uber unveils a suite of ambitious features to make your life easier

Ah, Uber. I’m just not sure what the company wants to be with its ever-expanding brand and platform. One day it’s a platform for flying cars. The next day it’s all about bikes, then it decides to let taxis share its platform.  And yesterday, it set its sights (or site, to be specific) much higher than ride-hailing and food delivery to something akin to life concierge, launching a new range of service offerings under the brand. Let’s take a look at their offerings and share some thoughts on the merits of each:  Uber Travel Uber is here to solve the… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Uber https://ift.tt/Nil4WFd Read full article: The Next Web

DeepMind’s astounding new ‘Gato’ AI makes me fear humans will never achieve AGI

DeepMind today unveiled a new multi-modal AI system capable of performing more than 600 different tasks. Dubbed Gato, it’s arguably the most impressive all-in-one machine learning kit the world’s seen yet. According to a DeepMind blog post: The agent, which we refer to as Gato, works as a multi-modal, multi-task, multi-embodiment generalist policy. The same network with the same weights can play Atari, caption images, chat, stack blocks with a real robot arm and much more, deciding based on its context whether to output text, joint torques, button presses, or other tokens. Assisted driving systems fail to avoid head-on collisions, study warns

Despite rapid improvements in advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), the technology is still falling short in collisions, as the latest tests from the American Automobile Association (AAA) reveal. ADAS systems are widely available — and are often called semi-autonomous, as they combine automatic vehicle acceleration with braking and steering. The AAA tested three different ADAS-equipped vehicles: a 2020 Tesla Model 3 with Autopilot, a 2021 Subaru Forester with EyeSight, and a Hyundai Santa Fe with Highway Driving Assist. The agency’s engineering team conducted 15 test runs, using a foam hatchback car and a bicycle dummy. The test vehicles performed well… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/keNChfU Read full article: The Next Web

Damn! Sonos’ newest products show just how smart the company is

Sonos is a fascinating company. In the 20 years since its inception, the business has carved out an enviable niche with its multi-room audio service. In fact, it’s hard to think of any other consumer technology company that holds such a sway over the market. From TVs to headphones, laptops to games consoles, there are few companies that dominate their spaces quite like Sonos. This isn’t to say the company doesn’t have competitors — I’ve written in great depth about my adoration of Bluesound gear and Bose has been in this sphere for some time — it’s just that they’re… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/1XGxKST Read full article: The Next Web

You can love AI-generated art, even if it isn’t technically ‘creative’

Ai-Da sits behind a desk, paintbrush in hand. She looks up at the person posing for her, and then back down as she dabs another blob of paint onto the canvas. A lifelike portrait is taking shape. If you didn’t know a robot produced it, this portrait could pass as the work of a human artist. Ai-Da is touted as the “first robot to paint like an artist”, and an exhibition of her work called Leaping into the Metaverse opened at the Venice Biennale. Ai-Da produces portraits of sitting subjects using a robotic hand attached to her lifelike feminine figure.… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/n7SgipN Read full article: The Next Web
