Astronomers think our Sun may have a long lost twin

A twin star of the Sun may have formed along with our solar system, a new study from the Center for Astrophysics finds. If confirmed, the presence of a second star would explain mysteries of the Solar System. This would mean the Oort Cloud at the edge of our system likely formed much as it is today. It would also mean that any “planet nine” beyond Neptune (should it exist) is likely a captured object from outside the Solar System. Roughly five billion years ago, the Sun formed within a birth cluster — a collection of infant stars swimming in a cloud… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/2YDgPGg Read full article: The Next Web

California bill no longer holds escooter operators liable for user accidents

While Californian regulators have been taking aim at the likes of Uber and Lyft over how they classify their drivers, the state has also been addressing legislation that governs shared mobility devices like escooters and ebikes — and it’s thrown operators a lifeline. Bill AB1286, a piece of legislation that defines who is responsible when a shared mobility device is involved in a crash, has been amended so that it no longer includes wording that would have forced guilt on escooter operators, The Verge reports. The original wording of the bill meant that shared mobility companies like Bird and Lime… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/3gtM6RT Read full article: The Next Web

Europe got 10 more unicorns in H1 2020 — but brace yourself for COVID-19 instability

The number of European unicorns increased during the first half of 2020, says PitchBook’s latest report. The aggregate valuation of current unicorns in the ecosystem rose, too. In total, Europe saw its unicorn count increase by 10 in H1 2020, bringing the total in the continent to 53. Even though this seems largely positive, PitchBook’s European VC Valuations Report: Q2 2020, notes that the rate of newly minted unicorns could cool down as it becomes increasingly difficult to capture growth opportunities in the current uncertain macroeconomic environment.  “Furthermore, valuations of numerous lossmaking late-stage startups could come under scrutiny as revenue… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/2YFYY1j Read full article: The Next Web

TikTok has faced a ton of adversity in the past few months. The app was banned in India after a skirmish at the China border between two armies. It had to pull out from Hong Kong’s app stores, and the US President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order that could ban… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/3e38xNb Read full article: The Next Web

Google's New Saved Tab in Maps Helps You Remember Important Places

Who doesn't love Google Maps? When it comes to navigation and mapping services, you'll have a hard time finding one that can do as much as Google Maps. And as powerful as it already is, Google is constantly updating it with new features that make it even more useful. Google announced on The Keyword that it is rolling out improvements to the Saved tab that'll make it easier to keep track of the places you've been or would like to visit. Overall, the new Saved tab is all about making it easier to remember key places. It takes the existing section of Google Maps and overhauls the UI to make it cleaner and more friendly. Now, places you've saved recently are moved to a section at the top. If you're looking for a place to eat, and you save a place that tickles your fancy, it'll be quickly accessible right at the top of the Saved tab. Another new feature shows you places you've saved that are near your current location. Obviously, this is all about sur...
