To evolve, AI must face its limitations

From medical imaging and language translation to facial recognition and self-driving cars, examples of artificial intelligence (AI) are everywhere. And let’s face it: although not perfect, AI’s capabilities are pretty impressive. Even something as seemingly simple and routine as a Google search represents one of AI’s most successful examples, capable of searching vastly more information at a vastly greater rate than humanly possible and consistently providing results that are (at least most of the time) exactly what you were looking for. The problem with all of these AI examples, though, is that the artificial intelligence on display is not really… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/cHoOeYv Read full article: The Next Web

Why is Elon Musk too chicken to take a measly $500K bet on AI?

He’s the PT Barnum of tech, the clown prince of wannabe edgelords, and the laughingstock of the artificial intelligence community. Elon Musk recently went on the record with what might be his most ridiculous prediction yet: 2029 feels like a pivotal year. I’d be surprised if we don’t have AGI by then. Hopefully, people on Mars too. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 30, 2022 “2029 feels like a pivotal year. I’d be surprised if we don’t have AGI by then. Hopefully, people on Mars too.” To the layperson unfamiliar with computer science, this probably just seems like a really smart… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/Ega82ZQ Read full article: The Next Web

Eureka! Scientists just linked two time crystals together for the first time

A team of researchers in Europe have successfully created a two-state system using time crystals. The correct response to reading that is: eureka! We would have also accepted “wow,” “OMG,” and “hooray,” given the potential implications of this incredible breakthrough. Up front: Time crystals are a recently discovered phase of matter. In their ground state, they oscillate between different configurations without losing or using energy. (Read more about how time crystals work here: Google’s ‘time crystals’ could be the greatest scientific achievement of our lifetimes) A team of physicists led by Lancaster University’s Samuli Autti managed to couple two time… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/JDhSnVy Read full article: The Next Web

Research shows the gender disparity in escooter rentals

Many cities are partnering with escooter providers to get cars out of their landscapes. But should we get behind this type of transport when they are massively underutilized by women? Research in Paris, for instance, found that 66% of dockless e-scooter riders were male. This week, Voi released a report on Shared escooters and gender equity. It reveals a significant disparity in the way men and women experience escooters — with the latter losing out.  Written in partnership with Voi’s Gender Equity Commission, it raises a lot of big problems, but also, thankfully offers a way forward. Let’s take a… This story continues at The Next Web https://ift.tt/ymTBer0 Read full article: The Next Web
