How can I recover corrupted messages in Windows Live Mail “Recovered items” folders?

July 30, 2014 at 02:47PM:

I have been using Windows Live Mail for some time. It worked in Vista and Windows 7. I have now installed it on a Windows 8.1 computer. I use storage folders to keep my e-mails so I can back them up and keep them off the e-mail servers.

Recently WLM came up with all my folders in a “Recovered Items folder”. I now have a bunch of e-mail that WLM cannot read properly. I’ve used Notebook and Microsoft Office Word and they read the e-mails just fine.

It looks to me that WLM has lost the file structure of these unreadable e-mails.

Has anyone seen this and can suggest a solution?
